- "A unique collapsible crossbow. Its heavy-duty bow string means that it can shoot heavy projectiles a great distance."
- ―Inventory description.
The Warden Crossbow is a weapon found in The Evil Within 2 and fills the role of a high-utility and versatile tool, capable of launching a plethora of specialized bolts that are suitable for a multitude of scenarios and purposes.
It is found in Chapter 3 during the quest Resonances next to an overrun MOBIUS Humvee and some bolts. Asking Liam O'Neal about additional firepower will mark its location on the map.
Overview[]
The Warden Crossbow is MOBIUS' own attempt at reverse-engineering Ruvik's Agony Crossbow along with putting in some of their own improvements. The result was a slightly more streamlined design with all the extraneous flair removed, with the bow now being vertically-oriented when primed rather than horizontal, though it still folds down normally when not in use.
Overall both crossbows handle almost the same way, though the Warden Crossbow features markedly less ammo types to use than the Agony in exchange for a vastly increased reserve capacity. As an added feature, all Warden bolt types can be set down as mines when shot against a solid surface instead of exploding instantly like Agony projectiles, which opens up more creative opportunities for using them as traps. One must be careful about using them, though, as Sebastian himself can be hurt if he crosses the tripwires or if they detonate too close to him.
Summary[]
Pros:
- Highly versatile with multiple bolt types
- Sizable reserve capacity
- Fast reloads
Cons:
- Requires a lengthy charge period for maximum effectiveness
- Ammo is scarce at the beginning of the game
- Bolts can harm Sebastian
Warden Bolts[]
The Warden Crossbow can load and fire five distinct types of bolts that apply a different property each. Most bolt types now feature a special upgrade at the final tier that changes their utility in certain ways. Unlike those of the Agony Crossbow, specific bolt types of the Warden do not increase or decrease the damage intake of enemies under their effects.
- Note: Tier II bolt upgrades with High-grade parts are shared with the Crossbow itself, though EX unlocks are specific to each bolt type and need to be researched separately.

Harpoon Bolts are the first type of ammo acquired for the Warden Crossbow alongside the Shock type. These are rather straightforward to use, being essentially regular crossbow bolts, and can send any Lost they hit flying, pinning them to obstacles as well if the trajectory is right.
Upgrades[]
Harpoon Bolt upgrades increase the amount of damage dealt with each shot (150 MAX).
- Special: Sets Harpoon Bolts on fire, causing them to deal burn damage to enemies struck. Enemies burnt by an upgraded Harpoon Bolt takes 51 fire damage every second for 10 seconds, up to a total of 510.
- Enemies already on fire (e.g. Disciples) are not immune to this extra burn if shot when unaware.
- Fire damage is not improved by bolt upgrades, and does not affect bosses.

Shock Bolts are the second type of ammo acquired for the Warden Crossbow alongside the Harpoon type. These deal relatively minor shock damage to enemies when shot directly at them, but can arc electricity between tight-knit groups. Shocked enemies have a chance to be knocked down, exposing them to a lethal stomp, and if they happen to be standing in water, a single Shock Bolt to the puddle will electrocute them all. Shock Bolts can also override broken electrical panels, allowing Sebastian to open up alternative paths.
Upgrades[]
Shock Bolt upgrades increase the number of additional targets to be affected by the secondary arcs.
- Special: Applies a damage modifier to Shock Bolts, allowing them to deal 30 damage per second to each affected target up to a maximum of 150.

Smoke Bolts are the third type of ammo acquired for the Warden Crossbow, in a MOBIUS case under the Union Auto Repair. Smoke Bolts do not have any offensive capabilities of their own, and are only able to generate thick smokescreens to distract enemies enough to buy time for Sebastian to escape. If shot directly at an enemy, they would receive no damage. The Level 3 smokescreen, however, creates confusion in those trapped in it and opening them up for a Sneak Kill.
Upgrades[]
Smoke Bolt upgrades increase the duration of each smokescreen, and the Level 3 upgrade allows Sebastian to perform Sneak Kills on those caught in the smoke AoE.
- Special: Causes Smoke Bolts to poison enemies caught inside their smokescreens for 20 damage per second. Sebastian is not affected by this.

Explosive Bolts are the fourth type of Warden projectile acquired, and is first seen in action inside the Mitchell & Sons Construction warehouse. It behaves similarly to its Agony equivalent, and can be deployed onto walls and floors as mines. If shot at any non-floor surface, the bolt head will project a perpendicular tripwire that will detonate the mine if crossed. It works best against groups or larger enemies, or as traps.
Upgrades[]
Explosive Bolt upgrades increase the damage and blast radius of the explosions.
- Special: Bolt fragments will detonate again shortly after the main explosion, causing additional damage. Amount of shrapnels randomise with each enemy, ranging from one to six depending on the number of bodyparts remaining after the first explosion, and each deals 60% of the bolt's base damage.

Freeze Bolts are the last type of Warden projectile acquired, and is first seen at the Union Nature Preserves when travelling with Esmeralda Torres. It behaves similarly to its Agony equivalent, and can be deployed onto walls and floors as mines that freeze enemies solid upon detonation. Most non-boss enemies will be debilitated by it, even Laura during the fight with Theodore Wallace. Lesser enemies frozen by the bolt can be shattered with a melee attack.
Upgrades[]
Freeze Bolt upgrades increase the freeze radius of each bolt.
- Special: Causes the freeze AoE to linger for a few seconds to capture additional targets and reinforcing those already solid. The AoE will hurt Sebastian if he is caught in its radius.

Ammo Pouch locations[]
- Pouch 1: Chapter 4 – In the Marrow. After fighting off the enemy waves in the two-story room with a resonance door lock, climb up the ladder to the left of the door and check the body inside. A Lost may be guarding this pouch, so be careful.
- Pouch 2: Chapter 9 – In the prison, go to the room to the right of the exit crank. There’s a side room with a file — look on the bench behind the table to find this easy-to-miss upgrade pouch.
- Pouch 3: Chapter 12 – After reaching the second section of the bottomless pit and encountering Spawns — straight ahead and to the right, there’s a large statue illuminating a corner of the ruins. Behind the statue, don’t miss the last bolt ammo pouch.
Achievements[]
Good to See You Again Acquired the Warden Crossbow. |
A Little Extra Kick to it Upgraded one of your Warden Crossbow bolts to max level. |
Smoke Assassin Killed 3 enemies using upgraded Smoke Bolts. |
Shock Therapy Stunned an enemy standing in water using a Shock Bolt. |
Trivia[]
- The "Something stronger" dialogue option will be absent when talking to O'Neal during a New Game+, as the Warden Crossbow has already been found and collected.
- The Warden Crossbow is the only weapon to be capped at upgrade Level 2. While the bolts do have Tier III upgrades, unlocking these do not affect the crossbow or other bolt types.
- The Good to See You Again achievement implies the Warden Crossbow is the same Agony unit acquired by Sebastian in the first game, only retrofitted and modified by MOBIUS.
