"This automatic weapon uses standard rifle ammunition. It packs a punch, but burns through ammunition quickly."
―Inventory description.

The Assault Rifle is an obtainable weapon in The Evil Within 2 and sole member of possibly the last firearm category found within Union.

It is collectible from the couch inside Yukiko Hoffman's Safe House next to the rifle's deceased owner, Esmeralda Torres.

Overview[]

The Assault Rifle in many aspects is the direct analog of the Machine Gun from the first game, chiefly being the sole obtainable fully-automatic weapon. Overall speaking, the Assault Rifle is almost strictly a mid-to-close-ranged weapon due to its sizable spread. It is capable of placing single shots rather accurately at range, but up close is where it excels the most due to its manageable fire rate and big magazines. Unlike the Machine Gun, spare ammo for the Assault Rifle is vastly more common, making it much more of a proper powerhouse than a mere novelty.

The Assault Rifle itself sees relatively little use during the first playthrough, however, due to it being acquired just before the final quarter of the plot.

Summary[]

Pros:

  • Good handling
  • Reasonably deep ammo pool and big magazines
  • Ammo is very cheap to craft even when off-bench
  • High stagger rate against larger enemies
  • Extremely powerful when combined with the Bullet Cascade skill.

Cons:

  • Relatively inaccurate at longer ranges
  • Found very late into the game: ammo does not drop in new game plus until after it would normally be acquired
  • Burns through ammo quickly if not monitored
  • Crafting ammo is a highly inefficient use of Gunpowder

Ammo Pouch locations[]

  • Pouch 1: Chapter 13 – Track the MOBIUS signal down the street from the intersection guarded by the fat, exploding suicide Lost. There’s a small corner to the left with a soldier.
  • Pouch 2: Chapter 13 – In the same chapter, enter the alley behind the Sanctuary Hotel and track the signal to find a second dead MOBIUS agent carrying an Assault Rifle ammo pouch upgrade.
  • Pouch 3: Chapter 14 – Inside the stronghold, the player will enter a room with an elevator shaft. Go into the optional room to the right. Here, take another right into a small closet with the last upgrade pouch inside.

Tips[]

  • Always fire the Assault Rifle in short, controlled bursts to save ammo and maintain good accuracy.
  • Upgrading the Assault Rifle's fire rate actually hinders its performance at range. This makes it harder to place accurate single hits down range due to the shorter delay between shots.

Trivia[]

  • The Assault Rifle is actually composed of a plethora of custom parts for the AR-15 platform. Its receiver consists of a Noveske flat top mated to a billet receiver, fitted with Daniel Defense-esque keymod handguard and stock (with the side rails of PDW-length collapsible butts), Magpul AFG, and feeds from Magpul PMAGs. Its ironsights are a combination of a KAC folding rear and TROY front battle sight.
  • The Assault Rifle seems to be the standard-issue longarm of MOBIUS troops and field agents. It is first seen in action at the start of Chapter 3 in the hands of the MOBIUS security personnel covering Liam O'Neal's retreat, but mysteriously vanishes as soon as the agent is killed.
  • The Assault Rifle was originally supposed to have an attached reflex sight, which can be seen on its early developer renders. At some point prior to the game's release, the optic was removed and the iron sights were flipped up. The setup is still seen in the hands of the previously mentioned MOBIUS security personnel at the start of the game. Torres' rifle has both the optic and the flipped-up iron sights during the animation of Sebastian bending down to pick up the weapon, but the optic disappears as soon as he places his hand on the handguard.
